Bonnaroo has come and gone, but in the wake of many tremendous sets and musical collaborations all weekend long, one can't reflect back on the weekend without mentioning another spectacular Bonnaroo set from Kentucky's own, My Morning Jacket. The quintet will release its highly anticipated new album Sept. 20 via ATO/RCA.
Recorded in upstate New York with producer John Leckie (Radiohead, New Order), the new album marks the studio debuts of new members Carl Broemel (guitar) and Bo Koster (keyboards.) The band even went outside their comfort level, recording outside the group's usual Kentucky studio. We spoke with My Morning Jacket's talented lead vocalist, Jim James, to find out why he thinks Bonnaroo is so successful and with all the changes was it easy overcoming the obstacle of self doubt.
"It seemed like it started out more towards the jam band community and stuff like that, but I really applaud the people that organize Bonnaroo because I think they've taken a lot of steps to try to make it appeal to anybody. Anybody, like indie rock, jam band, rap, R and B, pop, anything. And that's what a lot of people that I know are in music for, to break down those lines and have something that anybody, regardless of your race or your age or your sex or your religious background, anybody can just come here and have a good time." James went on to discuss breaking down self doubt on My Morning Jackets new album. "It's completed, thank you. The biggest obstacle would be over coming self doubt, but I think we over came self doubt and kicked its ass. So I think I'm pretty happy with it." With Bonnaroo done, My Morning Jacket will hit the road for a brief run opening shows for Wilco beginning June 21st and ending June 29th in Buffalo, New York. Our cameras were on hand for My Morning Jacket's performance of 'The Way that He Sings' on Sunday June 12th. The complete set list was: Off The Record, The Way That He Sings, 0 Is The One, One Big Holiday, Golden, Just One Thing, Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You, Lay Low, Heartbreakin' Man, Don Dante, Run Thru, Bermuda Highway, I Will Sing You Songs, I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man, Mahgeeta.
