The Annual San Diego Street Scene, which celebrated their 22nd year, has been recognized by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the top five American festivals. After two decades in the gas lamp district, Street Scene outgrew it's down town venue and last year moved to Qualcomm Stadium, which has 2.5 million square feet of space to accommodate multiple stages. With six stages featuring some of today's hottest bands both days drew close to 40,000 fans each day easily making Rolling Stones list of most successful festivals in America. With Friday's lineup featuring Kanye West, AFI, Social Distortion, Wu Tang Clan, Queens of the Stoneage, Wolfmother, She Wants Revenge and Nine Black Alps among many others, it was actually Saturday's set by Tool which concluded in fifteen people having to be hospitalized due to severe mosh pitting by fans.
We caught up with Jeff Tucker and Reed Calhoun of Rock Kills Kid, who are receiving a lot of buzz on the strength of the band's latest release 'Are You Nervous' to ask them their thoughts on playing the San Diego Street Scene.
"We've heard a lot about it actually. It's one of the best festivals you can play. Yeah and we're in festival mode right now because that's what we've been doing all summer. But this is definitely nicer and this is a pretty decent backstage little area that we have here. I think this is the best we've had. Sometimes our backstage is the van."
Besides the headlining set from Tool on day two, there were also performances by Snoop Dogg, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bloc Party, G Love, Donavon Frankenreiter, The Subways, The Editors and The New York Dolls to name just a few. The only set back to the lineup were last minute cancellations by My Chemical Romance and Sean Paul. Although a few fans were upset by the last minute changes, Street Scene more than made up for it with tremendous performances all weekend long. Each year San Diego Street Scene brings together an exceptional list of musicians ranging from big name acts to smaller independent acts still fighting their way up the musical food chain. With artists representing Hip Hop, Rock and Roll, Pop, Metal and Punk, Street Scene has grown up a little bit each year and you can expect the same for next year. For those of you who missed another amazing San Diego Street Scene this year we put together a montage of performances from day one and day two. Day one features performances from She Wants Revenge, Wolfmother, Queens of the Stoneage and Social Distortion. Day two features performances from Donavon Frankenreiter, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bloc Party and Snoop Dogg. (Pictured above Maynard of Tool photo courtesy Brian Yates)
