MICK ON TEACHING CLINICS WITHOUT HIS MASK

Slipknots own Mick Thomoson has concluded his first ever 5 city guitar clinic tour. For all his fans that wanted direction in the style and approach of Thomson's guitar, one only had to get to one of the clinics. Thomson said he hoped to create an intimate setting for interacting with his fans, as well as unveiling his new custom-designed Ibanez MTM1 Mick Thomson Signature electric guitar. Mick talked about his approach to teaching and what he hoped to get across to his students.

"Yeah, because basically my goals were to just illustrate some different points of the songs, the different techniques I use in addition to a very broad type of practicing where it would cross any sort of styles and age levels. It's more of a physical approach as to something that's musical, so you can apply it to any type of playing. A lot of times I think it's good to have a different perspective and it's sometimes good to see things through someone else's eyes."

The guitar clinic tour, which concluded May 10th also was a different experience for Thomson not having to wear his mask. In fact Thomson admitted by wearing the mask it allows him a anonymity rock stars don't often get and it took him a few minutes to get used to showing his face to his students.

"It was certainly different. Certainly, certainly different not having the mask on and having people look at you is kind of a strange feeling you spend so many years behind it. It was a little strange for half the first clinic and then after that you kind of fall into it. It's nice to have that barrier up and it's a lovely little wall of freedom to be whatever you want to be. When people are actually looking you in the eye it changes things a little bit. Like I said after so after so many years of doing it like we've been doing it, it was a little bit foreign, but a half hour into it I felt fine."

The clinic tour, which started in Wisconsin and ended in Ventura, California, allowed Mick to show fans some of Slipknot's signature riffs as well as answer questions and sign autographs for all in attendance. Thomson also revealed the band is in the midst of editing another DVD which will be the bands follow up to their immensely successful, Disasterpieces DVD. Look for Slipknot to take a much needed break from the road, at least for another year and a half.
