Daniel Radcliffe stars as Maps in December Boys, the eldest of four orphans who get a summer reprieve on Australia’s Kangaroo Island where they fully take advantage of their new found freedom.

As the character Daniel is doing things Harry Potter would be expelled from Hogwarts for doing. He drinks, fools around with the local girl and smokes cigarettes.

“It was just sort of one of those things. I smoked in Equus too and I had to smoke in My Poor Jack. Whatever the script says the character does, I do. I think he’s just bored and I think that’s in a way leads to him doing things that people might not like because there’s just nothing else to do.”

Daniel who has completed his orphan trilogy on screen fully embraces how fortunate he is to have both his parents.

“I suppose having played three orphans now I’m becoming increasingly aware of how lucky I am. That could be an effect it has on people. I’ve noticed of the people I know who have seen the film, the ones that are most affected are the people who have kids of their own, sort of tend to be very moved by it which is great. If we can make one parent cry, brilliant.”

December Boys, currently playing in select theaters, opens September 28th nationwide.
